AISI 5140 steel also can be called JIS Scr440 and DIN 1.7035 steel. It is one of the alloy steel. And it is one of the most popular steel grades in the productions of the machine. The 5140 steel round bar price is on the medium level and it was easy to processing. After tempering and quenching, the toughness, plasticity and wearing resistance of it will get better. Steel normalizing can make the spheroidizing for the organization of steel get easier. And it will raise the machinability of the semi-finished product with the hardness less than 160HBS. Tempering it at the temperature of 550℃-570℃ which can make it get better mechanical property. And the hardenability of it is higher than S45C steel. You can check 5140 Steel chemical composition and heat treatment as below.
5140 Steel Application
After hardening and tempering, it can be used to make the fittings for machines with high medium load and speed of work. Such as the automobile knuckle, gear wheel and axis of the machine tools. If it had been quenching and tempering with medium temperature, it will be a great choice for fittings with high load, low impact and good wearing resistance. Such as the gear wheel, lantern ring and etc. And after quenching and low-temperature tempering, the properties will be better than the last one. People usually use it to make the parts with good wearing resistance and handle high load, low impact. And you can see the principal axis, mechanical bolt and etc are made of it.

5140 Steel Sheet Plate Round Bar Heat Treatment
The ways of heat treatment for 1.7035 steel are normalizing, annealing, quenching, tempering and etc.
- Quenching it at the temperature of 850℃ and oil cooling.
- Tempering at the temperature of 520℃, then water-cooling and oil cooling.
After quenching, the surface hardness of it is 52-60HRC.
Nitrogen Treatment
5140 steel can nitriding, and the elements of it are good for nitriding. After nitriding, it can get higher surface hardness. And after nitriding, hardening and tempering, the max hardness can up to 72-78HRA. And the hardness of core will be 43-55HRC.
