8620 steel

8620 steel has high hardenability without temper brittleness. It is also called DIN 1.6523 and JIS SNCM220 steel. It also has good weldability, little tendency to form cold cracks, and good machinability and cold strain plasticity. It is used to make gears, shafting, bolting, springs, hand tools and etc. 8620 steel round bar sheet plate properties and 8620 steel composition as below.

1.6523 Steel Characteristics

  1. It is a low alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum case hardening steel.
  2. It has good external and internal strength, so there with high wear-resistant.
  3. It is usually used to make many medium-strength tools.

8620 Steel Application

It is mainly used as a material for impact and wear resistant parts such as automotive bearings, camshafts and etc. And in the carburized condition, it is used for gears, ring gears, shafts and crankshafts.

8620 Steel Round Bar Sheet Plate Heat Treatment and Produced


It may be given a full anneal by heat to 820℃ – 850℃, and hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section and cool in the furnace or air cooled.


Tempering of heat treated and water quenched parts of it (not carburized) is done at 400 F to 1300 F to improve case toughness with minimal effect on its hardness. This will also reduce the possibility of grinding cracks.


It will be austenitized at around 840°C – 870°C, and oil or water quenched depending upon section size and intricacy. And cool it in Air or oil required.


1675ºF (910ºC) and air cool. This is another method of improving machinability in 8620 steel material; normalizing might also be used prior to the case hardening.

Heat Treatment

This alloy may be hardened by heating to 1500 F followed by a water quench. Carburize at 1650 to 1700 F in an appropriate carburizing medium and oil quench to harden. Improved carburized case and core properties can be obtained by furnace cooling from carburizing at 1650 – 1700 F and then reheating to 1575 F.
