What is AISI 8620 Steel?

8620 steel has high hardenability without brittleness. It is also called DIN 1.6523 and JIS SNCM220 steel. It also has good weldability, little tendency to form cold cracks, and good machinability and plasticity by cold deformation. It is used to make gears, shafts, bolts, springs, hand tools, etc.AISI 8620 alloy steel properties and 8620 steel composition as below.

Heat Treatment


AISI/SAE/ASTM 8620 Steel Heat Treatment

(1)Glow
It can be fully annealed by heating to 820 – 850℃ and holding until the temperature is uniform throughout the section, and furnace or air-cooled.

(2)Cranking
Tempering of heat treated and water cooled parts (not carburized) is done at 400 to 1300 F to improve the toughness of the case with minimal impact on its hardness. This also reduces the possibility of grinding cracks.

(3)Hardening
It is austenitized at around 840°C – 870°C and oil or water quenched depending on the cross-section size and complexity. And cool it in air or oil required.

(4)Normalize
910ºC (1675ºF) and air cooled. This is another method to improve the machinability of 8620 steel materials. Normalizing can also be applied prior to case hardening.

(5)Heat treatment
This alloy can be hardened by heating to 1500 F and then water quenching. Carburize at 1650 to 1700 F in a suitable carburizing medium and oil quench to harden. Improved properties of the carburized case and core can be obtained by furnace cooling by carburizing at 1650-1700F and then reheating to 1575F.

What is the application of 8620 steel?

AISI 8620 alloy steel is mainly used as a material for impact and wear resistant parts such as automobile bearings, camshafts, etc. In the carburized state it is used for gears, ring gears, shafts and crankshafts.It can also be used for the claws and cone bodies of the roller cone bits for oil drilling and metallurgical open-pit mines, and to manufacture the forgings of the connecting rod valve section of the steam turbine gear whole rotor internal combustion engine.

How is ASTM 8620 steel tested?

Our AISI 8620 alloy steel guarantees high quality, and we use UT test to check each piece of steel; UT test: Ultrasonic Test, ultrasonic inspection and flaw detection, is one of the methods of non-destructive testing in the industry. When the ultrasonic wave enters the object and encounters a defect, a part of the sound wave will be reflected, and the transmitter and receiver can analyze the reflected wave, and the defect can be detected extremely accurately. And it can display the position and size of internal defects, and measure the thickness of materials. Ultrasound in UT is a mechanical wave with a frequency higher than 20 kHz. The frequency commonly used in ultrasonic flaw detection is 0.5 to 5 MHz. This kind of mechanical wave can propagate at a certain speed and direction in the material, and it will be reflected when encountering a heterogeneous interface with different acoustic impedance (such as a defect or the bottom surface of the measured object, etc.).
