T1 tool steel is a tungsten high speed steel. Its hardness, red hardness and the hardness at the high temperature are high, and it is easy to grind process. And it also is called JIS SKH2 and DIN 1.3355 steel. It can be used to process soft or medium hardness(300HB – 320HB or lower) materials. And it is the good material for high temperature wear-resistant mechanical parts. T1 Steel round bar sheet plate properties and heat treat as below.
T1 Steel Characteristics
It is a tool steel with high hardness, high wear resistance and high heat resistance, also be called high speed tool steel.
It has good machinability, but with low strength and impact toughness, easy to oxidize and carbon elimination.
T1 Steel Application
The application is decided by T1 steel chemical composition and properties. It is mainly used to make complex blades and impact-resistant metal cutting tools. It can also manufacture high-temperature bearings and cold extrusion dies. It also is used to make gear tools, milling tools, and tools such as punches, cutters and etc.

Steel Classification
It is a complex steel type with a carbon content generally is 0.70% – 1.65%. The amount of alloy elements is large, and the total amount is 10% – 25%. Classified according to the alloy elements as below:
- Tungsten high speed steel(tungsten content is 9% – 18%)
- Tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel(tungsten content is 5% – 12% and the content of molybdenum is 2% – 6%)
- High molybdenum high speed steel(tungsten content is 0% – 2% and the content of molybdenum is 5% – 10%)
- Vanadium high-speed steel, according to the different vanadium content, which is divided into general vanadium containing vanadium (1 to 2% vanadium) and high vanadium content (2.5 to 5% vanadium)
- Cobalt high speed steel (cobalt content is 5% – 10% )
- According to the different applications, they can be divided into general purpose and special purpose
T1 Steel Round Bar Sheet Plate Heat Treatment
Treatment | Temperature Range | Cooling/Quenching | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Forging | 1700-2100° F | Slow | Cool slowly in dry sand or in other insulating media |
Annealing | 1600-1650° F | Cool slowly at a rate of 35° F per hour to 1000° F | For best results, insulating media is desirable. Hold at temperature for 2 hours |
Stress Relieving | 1100-1300° F | Cool slowly | Stress relieve after rough machining |
Preheating | 1500-1550° F | Preheat time in furnace is ¾ Hr. per inch of thickness. Heating up to temperature as slow as possible | |
Hardening | 2325-2375° F(furnace) 2275-2350° F(salt bath) | Quench in air or warm oil. To minimize quenching strains, quench in salt at 1000° F | For maximum wear resistance, harden at 2375° F. For maximum toughness and high hardness, harden at 2275° F |
Tempering | 1022 ° F-1058 ° F | Temper T1 tool steel immediately after quenching. Hold for at least 2 hours | Double tempering is recommended. The usual tempering time is 2+2 hours. Recommended temperature is 1000-1075° F for cutting tools. 1100-1200° F for shock tools |
The Relationship Between Hardness and Tensile Strength
When its hardness is below 500HB, the tensile strength is proportional to the hardness. The T1 hardness decreases as the tempering temperature increases. But, in the quenched state and low temperature tempering below 300 ° C, the relationship between hardness and tensile strength is difficult to maintain. When the tempering temperature is about 300 °C, higher hardness with higher tensile strength. And if the hardness is lower, its tensile strength also is lower.
